How to hang curtain lights comes down to one order of work: start at the plug, fix the top wire level at its full width, and let every strand drop straight before the display goes on. A window, a wall and a bedroom each need a different fixing, but all three follow that sequence.
This guide is for the person on the step stool and for the retail buyer who answers their questions. The worked examples use the app-controlled curtain we build on our own floor in Foshan, part of our smart LED light strips range: thin strands hang from a single top wire, each strand carries its own run of RGB beads, and the whole curtain runs from a 5 V USB plug. The method suits any USB curtain light; the numbers below are those of our smart curtain lights.
Key takeaways
Plan from the plug, stretch the top wire to full width, keep the plug dry and put the display on a timer.
- The curtain runs from a 5 V USB plug on a 16.4 ft (5 m) lead, so the socket decides which corner you start from.
- A top wire squeezed narrower than the curtain bunches the strands, and a bunched grid turns a picture into a smear.
- The strings are rated IP44, a splash rating; the plug and adapter stay indoors or somewhere dry and covered.
- A high-power USB 2.0 port is specified for 500 mA, or 2.5 W, so ask for the rated current and use a wall adapter above it.
- Set the remote timer to 1, 2, 4 or 8 hours, because the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s holiday tips say to turn off light strings before bed or before leaving home.
What You Need Before You Hang Curtain Lights
You need four things before the curtain comes out of the box: a measured space, a fixing that suits the surface, a socket the 16.4 ft (5 m) lead can reach, and a safe way up. Measure the width and the drop of the area you want lit, because the curtain comes in 11 fixed sizes, from 1 x 1 m to 6 x 3 m (width x drop), and a picture only reads when the whole grid hangs flat. Pick the size that fits rather than folding the spare length.
The fixing depends on the surface, not on the light. Clear removable adhesive hooks suit smooth painted walls and window frames, a tension rod suits a window recess, and small cup or picture hooks suit timber and any wall where a pin hole is acceptable. The 2 x 2 m size weighs 420 g. Larger sizes have no published weight yet, so ask before choosing adhesive hooks, and confirm on the order what ships in the box.
| Item | Window | Wall | Bedroom |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top fixing | Tension rod in the recess, or hooks along the top of the frame | Removable adhesive hooks on a pencil line; a bracketed rod only if hooks will not hold | Hooks above the headboard, or ties on a canopy rail |
| Bottom control | Clear clips on the sill if a draught moves the strands; keep the drop clear of any heater below the window | Usually none; strands hang free | Clear clips if a fan or air-conditioning vent moves the strands |
| Power | USB adapter at the nearest indoor socket | Adapter at the socket, lead clipped along the skirting | Adapter behind the bedside table, lead away from bedding |
| Measure first | Inside width and height of the frame | Wall width; over 6 m needs two panels | Headboard width and the height above it |
Use a step stool or a stepladder, not a chair or the bed. In its November 2024 holiday safety release, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimated that about 14,900 people were treated in emergency rooms for holiday decorating injuries in the 2023 holiday season, about 160 a day, with nearly half of the injuries involving falls (CPSC). An indoor curtain keeps you off the roof, but the top of a window frame is still above head height.

Plan the Hang From the USB Plug Outward
Start at the socket, not at the window. The curtain takes its power from a 5 V USB plug at the end of a 16.4 ft (5 m) lead, so mark where the plug will sit first, then hang the curtain so the end the lead leaves from faces that socket. A lead stretched across a doorway or a walkway to reach power is a trip hazard and the first thing a visitor pulls loose.
Count plugs, not curtains. Each curtain has its own USB plug, so a window with two panels needs two USB outputs, and a four-panel scene grouped in the app needs four. One multi-port wall adapter with enough output for all of them keeps the job to one socket. Leave the inline controller somewhere you can reach its button without climbing.
The power source matters. The USB power standards table compiled in Wikipedia’s USB hardware article lists 500 mA at 5 V, or 2.5 W, for a high-power USB 2.0 device and 1.5 A, or 7.5 W, under Battery Charging 1.2; the same article notes that a device needing more power than a high-power USB device can draw functions erratically, if at all, from a single port. A television or laptop USB socket is a data port first. A wall adapter rated above the curtain’s draw is the safer default.

Here is the limit of what we can tell you in advance. We publish the curtain’s voltage, 5 V, but not the current each size draws, so that figure is a quote item: ask for the rated current of every size you stock and print the matching adapter rating on the shelf card. It is the one number that settles whether a shopper’s TV port will do.
With the plug fixed, the rest of the job runs in six steps.
Measure the space
Width and drop, then the size that fits without folding strands.
Mark the plug
Pick the socket and check the 5 m lead reaches it without crossing a walkway.
Draw the top line
A level pencil line at the full curtain width, starting from the plug end.
Fix the supports
A hook at each end and roughly every 50 cm between, or a rod or rail.
Hang, then drop
Top wire first; then free each strand so it hangs straight.
Test, then tidy
Run a scene, check every strand lights, clip the lead and set the timer.
How to Hang Curtain Lights in a Window
Hang the curtain inside the glass, on a tension rod set in the window recess or on hooks along the top of the frame, with the strands falling just clear of the sill. Inside is the right place: the strings are rated IP44, a splash rating, and the plug and adapter must stay indoors or somewhere dry and covered.
Size it to the glass, not to the wall. Measure the inside of the frame and choose a width that fits within it. The 2 x 2 m size (6.6 x 6.6 ft) with 400 LEDs is the standard window size, while 1.5 x 1.5 m and 1 x 1 m suit smaller panes. If the drop is longer than the glass, the bottom rows pile up on the sill and the bottom of every picture disappears, so a slightly short drop beats a long one.
Stretch the top wire to its full width. On the 2 x 2 m curtain the 20 strands hang 10 cm (3.9 in) apart and the picture is drawn on that grid; push the wire onto a rod shorter than the curtain and the strands bunch, so a snowman becomes a smear. If the window is narrower than the curtain, step down a size rather than squeezing the wire.
Decide who is looking. Most window curtains face the street, and pictures without words, a tree, a snowman, a heart, read fine from either side of the glass. Letters and numbers read mirror-image from one side, so if a design you draw in the app’s DIY mode includes them, check it from outside before you finish. If the window also has fabric curtains, hang the light curtain between them and the glass: sheer fabric on the room side softens the beads indoors and gives the street a pale backdrop.
Keep candles off that sill. Citing the National Fire Protection Association, the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal noted in December 2025 that more than one-third of home decoration fires are started by candles and more than two of every five happen because decorations sit too close to a heat source, and its tip sheet keeps lit candles at least 12 inches from decorations. A window dressed with fabric and a light curtain is exactly that kind of decoration.

How to Hang Curtain Lights on Wall Surfaces Without Drilling
Draw a level pencil line where the top wire will run, fix removable adhesive hooks along it, one at each end and roughly every 50 cm between, which on the 2 x 2 m size is every fifth strand, and hang the wire so it runs straight with no sag between hooks. For a 2 x 2 m curtain that is five hooks. Hook the wire close to where a strand joins it, so the strand hangs from a fixed point instead of dragging the wire down.
The wall decides the hook. Adhesive hooks hold best on smooth, clean, painted surfaces; on textured paint, brick or wallpaper they tend to let go. If no-drill hooks will not hold, a picture hook or a bracketed rod is the fallback. At 420 g, a 2 x 2 m curtain puts under 100 g on each of five hooks on our arithmetic, yet a hook rated well above that can still let go on a dusty or textured wall.
Set the line where the picture is seen. Behind a sofa, the bottom row should clear the backrest; behind a desk used for video calls, centre the grid on what the camera sees. Run the lead down the nearest wall edge and along the skirting to the socket instead of letting it hang across the picture.
A wall wider than one curtain takes several. The largest size is 6 x 3 m, and up to four curtains can be grouped in the app to run one synchronised scene, so a long feature wall or a party backdrop is built from panels hung side by side on one line. Hang every top wire at the same height; a step of a few centimetres between panels shows as a break in every picture that crosses it.

How to Hang Curtain Lights in Bedroom Spaces: Headboard, Canopy, Wardrobe
In a bedroom, hang the curtain on the wall behind the headboard, from a canopy frame, or down the side of a wardrobe, and keep the strands and the inline controller out of the bed itself. The wall behind the headboard is the easiest of the three: the top wire runs on hooks above the bed, and the headboard hides the bottom rows and the lead.
Mind the reach and the bedding. Hang the grid high enough that a sleeping arm cannot catch a strand, run the lead behind the bedside table rather than under the mattress, and leave the controller where pillows and covers cannot bury it. On a canopy, tie the top wire along the rail at its full width with clear cable ties, so the strands fall outside the fabric rather than inside it. Down a wardrobe side, the narrow 1 x 1 m or 1.5 x 1.5 m sizes fit where a 2 m width will not.
Then switch it off for sleep. In 2022 a Northwestern Medicine study published in PNAS found that a single night of sleeping in 100 lux of overhead room light, against under 3 lux, raised heart rate during sleep and insulin resistance the next morning, and the researchers advised keeping lights off, or dim, low and amber or red where a light is needed (Northwestern Medicine). An animated curtain is a bedtime light, not a sleep light. The remote timer, set to 1, 2, 4 or 8 hours, is there for exactly this.

Checks Before You Switch On: Lead, Plug, Timer, Grouping
Before the display runs for an evening, check five things: the lead reaches the socket without strain, the plug and adapter are indoors and dry, every strand lights, the timer is set, and grouped panels play in step. If a strand stays dark on the first night, check three things in this order: the plug is fully seated, no strand is caught behind its neighbour, and the adapter is rated above the curtain’s draw.
- Lead: slack all the way to the socket within its 16.4 ft (5 m), with no extension cable across a walkway. Move the adapter, not the curtain.
- Plug and adapter: indoors or somewhere dry and covered; the IP44 rating belongs to the light strings only.
- Strands: every one lit and hanging straight. A crossed strand is unhooked and re-hung from the top, never tugged from the bottom.
- Timer: set on the remote to 1, 2, 4 or 8 hours before you leave the room.
- Grouping: up to four curtains in one scene, with every top wire at the same height.
IP44 is worth one plain sentence for shoppers. Under the IP code defined in IEC 60529, the first 4 means protection against solid objects larger than 1 mm and the second means water splashed from any direction has no harmful effect, tested for 10 minutes with an oscillating spray tube (Wikipedia, IP code). It says nothing about rain running down a strand for a week, which is why the inside of a window, not an open porch, is the default.
Two habits matter more than the hardware. The Illinois fire marshal’s holiday guidance says decorations should never be placed in doorways or block escape routes. We read that as ruling out hanging a curtain across a bedroom or hallway door. The same guidance asks people to check that lights are rated for indoor or outdoor use and to turn off all light strings and decorations before leaving home or going to bed. Set the timer, and the second habit looks after itself.

For Retailers: Which Curtain Light Sizes to Stock and How to Hang a Store Demo
Stock by the spaces your shoppers have: one window size, one small size and one wide size make a starter range, and a lit demo shows the picture effect that a box photo cannot. We do not publish sell-through by size, so read the last column of the table as a fit guide, not sales data.
| Size (width x drop) | RGB LEDs | Bead spacing | Grid, strands x beads | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 x 1 m | 400 | 5 cm | 20 x 20 | Small windows, mirrors, desks |
| 1.5 x 1.5 m | 225 | 10 cm | 15 x 15 | Small windows, wardrobe sides |
| 2 x 1 m | 200 | 10 cm | 20 x 10 | Wide, shallow windows |
| 2 x 1.3 m | 260 | 10 cm | 20 x 13 | Wide windows, headboard walls |
| 2 x 2 m | 400 | 10 cm | 20 x 20 (published) | The standard window size |
| 3 x 1.5 m | 450 | 10 cm | 30 x 15 | Sofa walls, bay windows |
| 3 x 3 m | 400 | 15 cm | 20 x 20 | Tall walls, stairwell drops |
| 4 x 1.3 m | 520 | 10 cm | 40 x 13 | Long low walls, shop counters |
| 4 x 2 m | 800 | 10 cm | 40 x 20 | Feature walls, shop windows |
| 5 x 1 m | 500 | 10 cm | 50 x 10 | Banner-style strips |
| 6 x 3 m | 800 | 15 cm | 40 x 20 | Backdrops and event walls |
Read the LED column before the size column. The 1 x 1 m, 2 x 2 m and 3 x 3 m sizes all carry 400 LEDs, at 5, 10 and 15 cm spacing; on our arithmetic that is the same 20 x 20 grid at three scales. Only the 2 x 2 m layout is published, so if you plan to show one DIY design on several sizes, ask us to confirm it on samples first. The 4 x 2 m and 6 x 3 m sizes double the count to 800 beads in a wide 40 x 20 format that suits panoramic scenes better than square ones.
Hang the demo early. In its October 2025 holiday survey of 8,247 adults, the National Retail Federation found that 42% of shoppers planned to start browsing and buying before November, and that the average shopper expected to spend $262.56 on seasonal items such as food, candy, decorations and greeting cards (NRF). A curtain that goes up in December misses shoppers who started browsing in October. Halloween and Valentine’s Day scenes are built in, so a window demo can stay up past Christmas.
In the store, hang one 2 x 2 m curtain on a freestanding frame or a ceiling rod where it can be seen from the door, with its plug at a socket behind the counter. Pick two or three scenes that read from the entrance, such as a tree and a snowman, and keep the remote at the till for scene changes, with the app set up on a store phone or tablet so staff can show the DIY drawing mode. For shop fronts, up to four curtains grouped in the app play one scene across a row of windows.
Put three facts on the shelf card: the size, the 16.4 ft (5 m) lead and the IP44 indoor rating. For an energy line, keep it general: in 2015 the U.S. Department of Energy put LED holiday light strands at 70% less energy than conventional incandescent strands (DOE). For the wider Q4 picture, including LED strip kits, our Christmas LED strip stocking plan sets out the calendar.

All 11 sizes sit in our LED strip lights line and can be mixed on one order, quoted and sampled from the same factory floor.

FAQ
How to put up curtain lights?
Put up the top wire first and keep the strands bundled until it is fixed. Hook one end, then walk the wire along the marked line and hook as you go, so the strands never carry the weight of the wire. Once the top is secure, release the strands one at a time from the plug end and run each one straight between your fingers. On a 2 x 2 m curtain that is 20 strands, a few minutes of work rather than an evening.
How to install curtain lights?
Installing them is a plug-in job, not an electrical one. The curtain runs at 5 V from a USB plug, so there is no mains wiring and no electrician involved; the install is the fixing plus a USB wall adapter at a socket within 16.4 ft (5 m). Set it up in the app and try the remote while the curtain is still on the floor, because a fault is easier to find before the top wire goes up.
How to sync multiple curtain lights?
Group them in the app, up to four curtains, and they play one synchronised scene. The hanging decides whether that scene looks continuous: put every top wire at exactly the same height, and leave a gap between panels close to the bead spacing, 10 cm on most sizes, so the join reads as one more column of the grid instead of a dark stripe. Give each panel its own output on one multi-port USB adapter rated for all of them, once you have the rated current for each size.
How to hang Christmas curtain lights?
The same way as any curtain light, with one seasonal decision first: who the display is for. For passers-by, hang it inside a street-facing window; for the room, hang it on the wall near the tree, with the tree and the curtain on separate plugs so each can be switched off on its own. Then set the remote timer to 1, 2, 4 or 8 hours so the display ends with the evening rather than running all night.
